The worldwide public cloud services market is estimated to reach $122.5B in 2017, an increase of 24.4% from 2016 according to a recent IDC report. Companies are rapidly shifting to cloud-based services because of their outstanding convenience and scalability. However, on top of “traditional” cybersecurity threats that plague on-premises systems and devices, the cloud is susceptible to a new set of threats unique to cloud environments that inherently endanger organizations’ networks.
Organizations store an exhaustive amount of data in the cloud, making cloud infrastructures a particularly attractive target for cyber attackers. As physical IT bonds are broken, security teams also lose visibility into portions of the network. Furthermore, cloud applications are being used more by remote offices and employees, which are often less protected and can act as backdoors to central networks. Bring your own device (BYOD) policies also increase the complexity of devices to defend and compound this risk. Cloud providers offer a range of security controls to help protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of applications, data, and devices. However, within their shared security modules, they stop short of protecting operating systems and data, and do not automatically provide detection solutions for attacker lateral movements.
